At Secur-Serv, our onsite service experts are more than “one of the guys” — because they’re not all guys. Meet Teresa Smith, one of Secur-Serv’s stereotype-busting field service technicians.

Teresa Smith redefines FST: Female Service Technician!

Taking care of people and their devices is in Teresa’s DNA. Constantly curious, Teresa helped her father, an Air Force electronics technician, with household repairs. At 12 years old, she rebuilt her broken tape recorder, sparking an enduring love for anything related to mechanics. Teresa became the “go-to” in her family when things needed repair.

Beyond being the technical asset in her home, Teresa also shattered the perception of a service technician as the only female in her college classes and in her work building PC boards. Teresa graduated with her associate degree in Computer Science at 30 after putting herself through school and acquiring the necessary certifications to support her passion for mechanical and electrical device maintenance.

After a recruiting event in 1997 at Houston Community College, Teresa Smith joined Secur-Serv to maintain our optical mark recognition (OMR) scanners across Houston and San Antonio. With her skillset, she was soon cross-trained on other types of technologies as the company grew.

“I have worked with Teresa over the past 18 years and she has definitely set the bar high for employees at Secur-Serv. Not only has she always been professional, personable and great to work with, but she has also taught me about many field service-related items throughout these years together especially during my Omaha-based call center days.”

Shortly after Teresa joined our field service team, her manager, Terry Sandrock, nominated her to receive a Pillar Award for Outstanding Customer Service. The Pillar of Excellence Awards honored the top 1% of the company who exemplified one of our core values and made significant contributions to the business throughout the year. Teresa’s Pillar Award was inspired by one of her Galveston customers naming her “Vendor of the Year.” Teresa herself received the award, not Secur-Serv—a first for a customer to award an individual contributor versus a company.

Teresa embodies her pioneering role with style. When she calls to schedule an onsite visit, the voice on the line often says, “Tell him to be here at x time.” Teresa always smiles when she replies, “There is no ‘he’—I’m Teresa, your dedicated Secur-Serv technician, and I will be repairing your equipment.”

When Teresa isn’t in her company truck answering the call in the Houston metro area, she enjoys taking care of her family, saltwater dock fishing, hanging out in her backyard pool, playing competitive darts or pool, and firing up the smoker for some brisket, chicken, or ribs.

An unexpected but rewarding career path as a Senior Field Service Technician on the front lines for Secur-Serv is a top priority to Teresa. For 23 years, her consistent dedication to her customers keeps her focused, working hard, and always willing to learn new things. Secur-Serv is proud to have a passionate and driven team member like Teresa serving our customers.
